The Tutor-time Personal Development Program Booklets (TPDP)

Marc's slides from the 2025 Association of Teachers of Psychology conference at the University of Warwick on Friday 12th July 2025.
Abstract: Intuitively, learning may seem self-evident, even ubiquitous. However, what, where and how we learn is often beyond our control; this is particularly true for students in school learning environments. Drawing on research conducted in secondary schools, this talk explores what students perceive authentic learning to be, what factors affect student conceptualisations of success, and what students consider to be authentic motivators when learning.
One of the PhD's largest data collection exercises involved collecting during a secondary school's Tutor Time Development Program (TPDP). All UK secondary schools’ normal daily routines involve time spent by students in ‘tutor periods’ which are used to support well-being, provide Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE; e.g., DFE, 2019) education, and cover some parts of mandatory Citizenship (e.g., DFE, 2013) study. While some content is prescribed, other activities are based on schools’ individual needs and their institutional beliefs as to what should constitute a broad and balanced pastoral curriculum offer. Here, during the PhD, the TPDP provided the school support in supporting students across all year groups with information/guidance on metacognition and some of its components. Particularly, material related to Self-Regulated learning, Motivation and Goal-orientation. The booklets which supported the TPDP provided educational stimuli and also intermittently collected Individual Difference (ID) measures relevant to both the TPDP and this thesis (i.e., Affect, Hope, Personality trait). More information about the particular use of the TPDP during the PhD can be found here. Many other schools have used and adapted the resources since - they can be found in PDF format here below. Please contact Marc should you wish to be sent the original PPT and Word documents.
